'Managing a Home from Home' takes as its foundation the system of standard setting described in 'Creating a Home from Home' which focuses on the needs and wishes of people living in care homes.

The Guide takes this work a significant and useful step forward by showing how the standards can be put into practice. It examines each of the standards and describes what issues need to be addressed by managers to ensure they attain high standards in the homes they run.

An introductory chapter leads readers smoothly into the way the rest of the text is organised and explains the links between the Manager's Guide and the Standards Guide; although each can stand alone, the Guides are best used in conjunction. As well as guiding the reader to further sources of information, each of the other chapters has a set of 'review activities' which can be used as an aid for staff training and for refining home management skills.

Many of the points made will apply to all people in residential provision but a separate companion report is under preparation to deal with the training needs of residential child care workers.

This is the third major publication produced by the Residential Forum. The first two, "Creating a Home fmm Home" and "Managing a Home from Home", focused on setting and assessing standards of care and managing a high quality service. "Training for Social Care" follows on from the first two and argues the need for sound training systems to enable the workforce to practise and manage effectively.
